Janis Mann
This month's interfaith Jazz concert
Janis Mann - vocals / Rich Eames - piano
John Belzaguy - bass / Kendall Kay - drums
Described by critics as "one of the Southland’s finest jazz vocal artists," vocalist Janis Mann brings her inimitable vocal interpretations to the Evening Jazz Vespers series at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church.
Janis Mann's latest CD "Celestial Anomaly" with pianist Kenny Werner was described by JazzTimes' Christopher Loudon as "a masterful fusion of musical minds. Mann is not only one of the most skilled vocalists around, but one of the most alluring as well." The new CD, her 7th, followed in the path of her previous 2 releases by charting high on the national JazzWeek radio charts. Critic Andrew Gilbert of the San Jose Mercury News describes her as "brilliant." Cadence magazine says, "Mann most often figures as the fourth performer in a full-fledged quartet."
Janis is currently based in Los Angeles and performs often in New York, notably at the Blue Note and the Kitano. Her recent touring includes San Francisco and Seattle. In addition to her own popular shows, Janis performs in duet with jazz legend Diane Schuur, including appearances at Yoshi's and Jazz Alley. Schuur was also a guest on Janis' CD "A Perfect Time." Legendary drummer Roy Haynes invited Janis to guest with his trio on several occasions, remarking "Great singer! I haven't heard anyone like Janis Mann in years."
At once both a striking song stylist and a fearless improviser, Janis Mann is that rare artist who can sweep you away with her captivating sound. She is a true jazz singer in the manner of Carmen McRae, Betty Carter, and Shirley Horn, yet with a sound all her own. An exciting and engaging performer, Janis' rich timbre, flexibility, and range often invite comparisons to Sarah Vaughan. Some of the other jazz luminaries she has sung or recorded with include John Clayton, Peter Erskine, Joe LaBarbera, Roy McCurdy, Bill Cunliffe, Tamir Hendelman, Eric Reed, Dave Frishberg, and Jeff Clayton, along with many others.
Janis Mann's music is available at online retail outlets including CDBaby, Amazon, and iTunes. For Janis' biography, photos, reviews, song samples, and more visit www.janismann.com.
